Tiffany Studios New York "Nasturtium" Chandelier

This octagonal Tiffany "Nasturtium" chandelier is divided by eight vertical brown and tan columns, each extending slightly below the lower border, and two matching horizontal bands that represent a trellis—a decorative device the company also employed in many of Tiffany’s hanging shades. Over this latticework are slender green vines and masses of crimson and orange nasturtium flowers, artistically positioned against a delicate lavender and burnt umber background.

Curator's Notes
Nasturtiums were commonly known in Europe as Indian Cress or a translation of “Capucine cress”, in reference to the flower shape, which resembles Capucine monks’ hooded robes. Leaves of both species were eaten in salads; unripe seeds and flower buds were pickled and served as a substitute for capers.
