Marcus & Co. Mid-Century Sapphire and Moonstone Bracelet
Dating from the early 1940s, this Marcus & Co. sculptural carved moonstone, sapphire and diamond seashell bracelet is set in platinum. It is designed as a series of carved urchin shells, accented by circular-cut sapphires and diamonds joined by curving lines of calibré-cut sapphires, interspersed with carved turbo shells and oval-cut sapphires, completed by a carved moonstone scallop clasp. An intriguing design whose gems exhibit intense blue phenomenon, this unique jewel conveys the beauty and luminosity of the ocean and its creatures.

In the late 1930s, returning to their traditional well of inspiration in naturalism, Marcus & Co. created not only oversize flowers but a small group of creatures of the ocean and sky, such as seahorses, butterflies, luna moths, birds, and turbo shells, realized in beautifully carved and luminous moonstone. Various numerical inscriptions on the reverse show that it was a special order, possibly for a longtime client who brought in a Marcus jewel from c. 1910 for remounting, a transaction of trust in which some of the earlier gems wold have been incorporated into a re-imagined contemporary jewel.
