Van Cleef & Arpels Multi-Gem Necklace and Earrings

Created circa 1964, this Indian-inspired necklace of sapphire, emerald, ruby and diamond is set in 18K gold. The tapering necklace of sapphire beads spaced by rubies suspends a graduating flexible fringe of seven sapphire drops with twisted gold wire and diamond caps, interspersed with emerald leaves. The pendant earrings are each designed with a diamond star centering a sapphire bead, suspending a ruby and sapphire drop with gold wiretwist cap and flexible marquise-cut diamond fringe, set in 18K gold and platinum. Having been a prize possession of the original owner until now, this colorful set of Van Cleef & Arpels jewels expresses the 1960s fascination with the spirit, exuberance and originality of Indian design and materials.

Some of the most important mid-century Van Cleef and Arpels jewely was created "in the Indian mode." The work was inspired in part by 1950s orders from members of the Indian aristocracy, such as the Mahrajee of Baroda, who ordered among other jewels a spectacular bib necklace of large cabochon emeralds and rubies. The Indian style as interpreted by Van Cleef & Arpels drove a revolution in 1960s jewelry forms, materials and colors, and remained popular through the decade.
