A form of aluminum oxide, fine rubies derive their vivid red hue from chromium, one of earth’s rarest elements. Chromium, present as a substitution of the aluminum atoms scattered throughout the mineral structure, radically alters the light absorption of the mineral, changing it from colorless to red.
