Tiffany Studios New York “Border Dogwood” Table Lamp

Regular square panels of amber, pink, and green mottled glass dominate the shade, interrupted by a joyful border of bright white, pastel pink and peachy orange dogwood blooms framed by multihued green leaves. A masterful trick of perspective suggests that the dogwood border has been superimposed over the background, with the life-sized blooms seemingly contending for space to unfurl within the limited confines of the border. The breathtaking fern-shaped base is adorned with evening primrose leaves, a wildflower often found alongside ferns in their natural habitat. Additionally, the stem is decorated with the curled young fronds of the maidenhair spleenwort, a plant typically found on wet cliffs and old stone walls.

The dogwood was a well-recorded favorite of Louis Comfort Tiffany's. He believed that the white flowers "reliably brighten things." The symbolic tradition of these bright, white flowers is quite rich: with their pure white hue, dark, stigmata-like petal tips and spiny centers that resemble small crowns of thorns, this flower has long served as a symbol of Christianity. In Victorian times dogwood flowers were given to young women by doting young men as a symbol of affection. If the dogwood flower was kept it was a widely-understood sign of mutual interest. However, if it was returned, this was the surest symbol of unrequited love.
