Tiffany Studios New York "Dogwood" Chandelier

The shade of this Tiffany Studios New York "Dogwood" leaded glass table lamp features a bouquet of white and cream dogwood blossoms against the green, blue, and sienna striated glass. Each blossom in the shade is unbelievably modeled and shaded, to mimic the natural, slight darkening of hue found in the petals of dogwood blossoms. Tiffany favored the dogwood, both as an arboreal species and as a motif for decoration, inevitably choosing the native variety, Cornus florida. When describing the grounds at The Briars, he talked about how this tree with its white springtime flowers "brightens things."

The dogwood was a well-recorded favorite of Louis Comfort Tiffany's. He believed that the white flowers "reliably brighten things." The symbolic tradition of these bright, white flowers is quite rich: with their pure white hue, dark, stigmata-like petal tips and spiny centers that resemble small crowns of thorns, this flower has long served as a symbol of Christianity. In Victorian times dogwood flowers were given to young women by doting young men as a symbol of affection. If the dogwood flower was kept it was a widely-understood sign of mutual interest. However, if it was returned, this was the surest symbol of unrequited love.
